Raising awareness for correct hygiene behaviour in Kokaray

Given the dramatic situation in Pakistan Malteser International, the worldwide relief service of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, strengthens its relief efforts in the medical field as well as in the food supply. ”We will employ up to 20 additional national staff members – nurses, midwives and medical doctors - in order to be able to provide more people with direct help,” says Dr. Jürgen Clemens, Senior Desk Officer Pakistan of Malteser International, upon his return to Germany after his 10-day mission to Pakistan. Swat/Islamabad. In addition to one confirmed case, there are six suspected cases of cholera in the hospital in Mingora. The medical teams of Malteser International, the worldwide relief service of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, will support the local health authorities in Mingora in order to prevent the outbreak of an epidemic. The three teams of Malteser International, the relief service of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, that are working in the Swat valley in Basic Health Units since the flooding started, are caring for more than 600 patient each day. Additionally to the work in the Health Units, a fourth team cares for injured and ill people coming to mobile clinics that are set up in a different village every day. “We are very happy that we could start our relief immediately in Swat, as our medical teams have already been working there before the catastrophe and none of our staff was directly affected,” reports Dr. Juergen Clemens, Senior Desk Officer Pakistan at Malteser International, from Islamabad. “But the situation stays critical as it continues to rain,” warns Clemens. In addition to its medical emergency relief for about 10,000 people in the Swat Valley, Malteser International, the relief service of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, will also distribute staple food – flour, rice, oil, salt and sugar – to 2,000 families in the severely affected districts of Swat and Kohistan to assure their survival for the next three months. Furthermore, the families will receive family kits with cooking equipment and tarpaulins to protect themselves against the enduring rain. Malteser International, the relief service of the Order of Malta for worldwide humanitarian aid, provides emergency relief for about 10,000 flood-affected families in Swat District with three medical teams, each of them consisting of a medical doctor, a midwife, a nurse and a hygiene consultant. Furthermore, the teams will distribute water purification tablets and 1,000 hygiene kits. These kits contain toothbrushes and paste, soap, shampoo, towels, canisters for drinking water, multi-detergent and sanitary items for women. The teams also counsel people about right hygiene behaviour in flood situations to reduce the number of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea. – The flood relief of Malteser International in Pakistan is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
